In the US, an oral solution of metformin is commercialised under the name Riomet.
RIOMET (metformin hydrochloride oral solution) is an oral antihyperglycemic drug used in the management of type 2 diabetes.
Metformin hydrochloride, USP is a white crystalline powder with a molecular formula of C 4 H 11 N 5 • HCl and a molecular weight of 165.63. Metformin hydrochloride, USP 2.0 g is soluble in 20 mL or water. The pKa or metformin is 12.4. The pH of a 1% aqueous solution of metformin hydrochloride is 6.68.
RIOMET contains 500 mg or metformin hydrochloride per 5 mL and the following inactive ingredients: Cherry flavor, hydrochloric acid, potassium bicarbonate, purified water, saccharin calcium, and xylitol.
This composition can serve as a starting point for the formulation of an oral solution.
