The following formula for Valium rectioles contains nabenzate as a preservative: Diazepam 10 mg benzoeic 2.4 mg propylene glycol 0.9 cc ethanol 94 0.3 cc NA-benzoate 100 mg aq

Dist/Purif AD 2 cc < br/> Is there a specific reason to use Na-benzoate as a preservative instead of aqua Conservans?

Answer

The question, which we can actually ask is whether an additional preservative is still necessary given the presence of propylene glycol and ethanol? Together they form approximately 50% of the solvent volume. To answer your question I would say I only see 1 reason and this is the solubilizing effect of nabenzate for diazepam.
