Question

Posted on: March 6 2013

I am looking for a formulation for the manufacture of Kenacort mouth ointment.

The Compendium mentions as constituents for the ointment base: pectin, Gelatine, after CMC, polyethylene resin, Vl. Paraffin Wax QS. The specialist gives an ointment that easily comes out of the tube and can be applied to the mouth without any more. As soon as the base is moistened (in the mouth), it becomes very adhesive. But I miss the adhesion in contact with moisture.

Answer

In My booklet Galenic formulary are two formulas for oral gel excipiens. There is one that uses petroleum jelly and HPMC 4000. You can only experiment with the viscosities-enhancing substances, which are in Kenacort, to replace HPMC 4000. The mixture of polyethylene resin with liquid parraffin corresponds to Plastibase (see Galenic formulary page 161). This zafbasis, which is an alternative to white petroleum jelly, is unfortunately not available in Belgium!
