Strong sulfur odor in Kaomycin suspension.

We were asked to prepare Kaomycin solution, a medicine that is no longer available for veterinary use.
We have dissolved neomycin sulfate and pectin in Aqua; kaolin suspended with Methyl cellulose mucus 5% and obtained a well-shaken suspension. It is stable for the time being, but after +-1.5 months the suspension has a very strong sulphur odor. Unfortunately, We have not added any preservative or other excipients. What could be the problem here?

Answer

This is a peculiar phenomenon for me. The literature only talks about the oxidability of Neomycin. Whether or not a sulphur odor arises is not mentioned anywhere. It is recommended that you add 0.5% nametabisulfite. This seems to me a lot and therefore I would start with 0.2%. It must be packed in airtight containers (caution with plastic!) and stored outside the influence of the light, at a temperature below 15 ° C.
your composition can be improved on the basis of the NF V.
