We need to make a nasal ointment with 4% chlorhexidine.

An attempt to make an ointment (water and fat phase) with the liquid (digluconate) Form of chlorhexidine gives an over-running ointment. I would like to try this with the powder (chlorhexidine diacetate), almond oil and white petroleum jelly. However, a colleague thinks that the powder and the chlorhexidine in liquid form (digluconate) may not be exchanged because they have a different effect (adhesion). However, I do not find anything about this.

Answer

Use the diacetate in a classic ointment base for the nose: 2/3 Vaseline and 1/3 liquid paraffin or sweet almond oil. You could optionally add 10% Arlacel C for better emulsion formation Tusen   ointment and nasal fluid.
