Eye drop with Nafazoline HCl

Naphcon Forte (similar to Minhavez) eye drop is no longer available... The ophthalmologist, however, asks us to prepare this eyedrop magijet. The speciality has the following composition per ml: Naphazoline 1 mg; Benzalkonium chloride 0.1 mg; Boric acid; NaCl KCl DinatriumEDTA; Sodium carbonate monohydrate; Concentrated hydrochloric acid; Water

Answer

I would use the composition of the German Formularium for eye drops Nafazoline HCl 0.05%   and adjust

R/Nafazoline HCl OPL 1  %     1.0 g

Boric acid 190 mg

Benzalkonium chloride opl 0.05%   2 ml

Na2EDTA OPL 1% 1.0 G

Water for injections up to 10 ml

The concentration used for benzalkonium chloride as a preservative is 1 on 10,000

The Eyedrop can be sterilized in the vial with the flowing water vapour method or possibly through filtration by a sterilized membrane filter in a sterilized eye dropper vial. It is clear that the first method is preferable.
