We've already rubbed it with cherry syrup, but the flavor remains far too bitter for a child.

You can use the following suspension in your case:
R/metronidazole benzoate 6.44 g (4% metronidazole) Nabenzate 100mg Tween 80 100mg 4% avicel RC 981 dispersion 75g Nasaccharinate 200mg Strong orange peel tincture 5g Freshly boiled water up to 100ml
It is said that the benzoate has a more acceptable flavor.
