Incompatible baziness between Chloramine and PEG

We get following preparation:
R/Liquid Carrel Dakin 10%
cod Liver oil 10%
Unguentum polyethylene glycol 50g
In the journal "Pharmazeutische Verfahrenstechnik heute 2" Band 1 Oct. 1980 We Find an indication of a Incompatibility between chloramine and polyethylene glycol. What would this suspected incompatibility be based on?

Answer

This incompatibility will be based on the presence of free Cl2, which possesses oxidative properties, so that peroxides can be formed in PEG and presumably also in cod liver oil. Normally one used mostly wool grease, cod liver oil and water for this ointment.
only with petroleum jelly no reaction will occur. But I suspect that the formation of peroxides is not annoying considering these are equally good antiseptic. As far as the preservation of the excipients is concerned, it is not ideal. But it is not counted on a long shelf life.
same incompatibility is perhaps also valid for Joodpovidone in PEG ointment (= Isobetadine)?
