A patient suffers from a dry mouth and has tried all sorts of sprays without results. Do you have a good formula for a wetting mouth spray?

Answer

I propose the following solution: NaCl 50 mg; KCl 60 mg; Na2HPO4 12 AQ 370 mg; KH2PO4 620 mg; Sorbitol Liquid not crystallizable 50 ml; Na-CMC (middle viscosity) 0.25% to 100 ml.

Optionally, you may use hydroxyethylcellulose; one can also add a flavouring: anise, mint (spiriti), fennel volatile oil (1 ml), strong orange peel tincture, vanillin.

See Anijsyrup, Orange peel or orangey syrup and other

If this solution is not atomable, it will have to be used as a rinse agent and circulate for 5 minutes in the mouth. For example, measure 10 ml in measuring cup or with syringe.
