Tried to make glycerol ointment. Since wheat starch is not stocked at wholesale, I tried rice starch.

Preparation carried out as described in BF. Do not dissolve 6 g of salicylic acid in the heated glycerol. However, when stirring/cooling, NO thick translucent mass arises, but everything remains liquid and milky white. Is there a solution?

Answer

(with the collaboration of Apoth F. of Paris)

after a few tests the following shows:

  1. the glycerol ointment does not succeed with the salicylic acid dissolved and with the use of potato starch instead of rice starch
  2. The glycerol ointment does not succeed with rice starch even when salicylic acid is processed in the Cooled glycerol ointment
  3. the glycerol ointment succeeds with potato starch but salicylic acid must be processed in the cooled glycerol ointment.
The influence of the temperature has to do with the relatively high solubility of salicylic acid at higher temperature.
