Question

Posted on: March 6 2013

We are urgently looking for an emulsifier, suitable for the inwork of a quantity of water in petroleum jelly, which should not be derived from palm oil or any other nut oil.

The preparations are intended for a child (+-9 years) who has an extreme allergy (breathing distress to respiratory arrest) for these components. Even eating cakes prepared on a baking tray that was used for an earlier preparation with such an oil can provoke allergic reactions. Dermatological preparations (O. T. C products) cannot be used by this patient because of the aforementioned ingredients.

Answer

(in collaboration with Prof. A. Goossens)
W/o emulsifiers such as wool grease alcohols (lanoline), Sorbitan sesquioleate and Sorbitan monostearate and O/W emulsifiers such as Macrogol esters and ethers (VB Cetomacrogol) are certainly admitted.

Usually the oils are as such and few or not chemically modified derivatives that can provoke allergic reactions.
