Can propylene glycol as solvent in mouthwash be replaced by glycerol for a pregnant lady?

Concerning the following preparation as mouth Rinse agent: Nystatin (24ml speciality), Prednisolone (200mg), lidocaine. HCL (400mg), carmellose sodium (2g), Popyleenglycol (10ml), mint spiritus (2%), ad 500 ml with aqua Destillata. The patient in question is a newly pregnant lady. The literature shows that Nystatin is not absorbed by the PO and Prednisolone/lidocaïneHCL are not teratogen. Propylene glycol is potentially toxic, although the solution is not swallowed. Is it possible to replace this with 10 ml of glycerol? The literature does not display data concerning pregnancy. In addition, does this have a relevant effect on solubilities, preparation method or stability and can be used just the same amount as propylene glycol?

Answer

Propylene glycol is a solvent that is in discussion in recent years. In     The composition, which you specify to me, the propylene glycol can be used to dissolve the prednisolone   but I fear that when further diluting with water the prednisolone still precipitts. In glycerin will not dissolve prednisolone.

You will therefore have to mix and rub lidocaineHCl   prednisolone and NaCMC together with glycerin to obtain a nice "Papje", which you can then dilute with the nystatin. And then finish the preparation further.
